Riverside County Sheriff Services Could See Rate Hike for Event Security by 2027
Riverside County could see higher costs for law enforcement services at public events in the coming years. The Riverside County Board of Supervisors is set to review Sheriff Chad Bianco’s proposal to increase overtime extra duty pay for deputies assigned to special events such as parades, fairs, festivals, and other large gatherings.
Currently, the rate for a patrol deputy is $101 per hour. If the proposal is approved, this rate would rise to $130 per hour by February 2027. The adjustment aims to reflect the increased operational costs and ensure the county can continue to provide high-quality law enforcement services at public events.
The proposed rate hike would apply to law enforcement services contracted by school districts, courts, and municipalities within Riverside County. These contracts cover a wide range of events and duties, where deputies play a critical role in maintaining public safety and order.
The financial impact of the proposed increase is estimated to exceed $930,000, a figure that highlights the growing costs of public safety services amid evolving demands and budget pressures.
Sheriff Bianco’s request comes as counties across the nation face similar challenges in funding law enforcement operations, particularly for services beyond regular patrol duties. Supporters argue that the pay adjustment is necessary to attract and retain qualified deputies for extra duty assignments, ensuring public safety at large and often complex events.
Critics may raise concerns over the budgetary impact, especially for school districts and smaller municipalities already grappling with financial constraints. The Board of Supervisors will weigh these factors carefully in the upcoming decision-making process.
If approved, the rate increase will help Riverside County maintain its commitment to public safety while adapting to the increasing costs of law enforcement services.
