Endangered Mexican Wolf Dies from Anesthesia Complications at Living Desert Zoo

In a heartbreaking incident, Drew, a seven-year-old Mexican wolf, passed away due to anesthesia complications while undergoing a veterinary procedure at the Living Desert Zoo and Gardens.

Drew had a persistent lesion on his back that failed to heal, prompting veterinary staff to perform a biopsy for further examination. To obtain necessary X-rays, the wolf was anesthetized. Unfortunately, during the procedure, Drew experienced severe complications—his heart and breathing stopped.

Veterinary staff acted swiftly, initiating CPR efforts in an attempt to revive the wolf. "You can perform CPR on animals just like we do with humans, which underscores the importance of knowing CPR skills," stated zoo officials. The team performed multiple rounds of CPR, but their efforts were ultimately unsuccessful.

The Living Desert Zoo expressed deep sorrow over Drew's loss, highlighting the critical endangered status of Mexican wolves. "It's devastating to lose any animal, but losing a Mexican wolf is particularly heartbreaking," zoo representatives shared.

The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service had approved the procedure Drew underwent. Currently, the zoo awaits the necropsy results to understand more about the complications that led to Drew's death. The zoo promises to update the public as more details emerge.

The Mexican wolf is one of the most endangered mammals in North America, making every loss a significant blow to conservation efforts. Drew's passing is a tragic reminder of the fragility of these rare creatures and the ongoing challenges in wildlife conservation.
