Local Lawmakers React To Chuckwalla

Local leaders are voicing concerns following reports suggesting that the Chuckwalla National Monument's designation may be reversed. The confusion started on Friday, when the White House highlighted a potential rollback of former President Biden’s executive orders, which included the establishment of Chuckwalla National Monument. Over three months ago, Biden had signed an executive order designating Chuckwalla as a national monument, aiming to protect its natural landscapes and promote sustainable practices like renewable energy development.

However, recent statements from the White House led to confusion, as a fact sheet removed references to Chukwalla’s status being reversed. This raised questions among local officials, including Congressman Dr. Raul Ruiz, who expressed concerns about the potential economic impact of such a decision.

"Chuckwalla is crucial not only for protecting the land but also for supporting economic development through renewable energy and tourism," he said.

The congressman stressed that reversing a national monument status would be unprecedented, particularly after Biden’s efforts to protect the area. In addition to federal representatives, state officials are also weighing in. State Assemblyman Greg Wallace noted their continued work with local tribes, underscoring that their resolution calling for the national monument status remains a priority.

"We are committed to partnering with tribes to ensure that Chuckwalla retains its designation, regardless of federal decisions," Wallace affirmed.

Meanwhile, the Mojave Desert Land Trust is taking action by organizing a rally this weekend to garner local support for keeping Chuckwalla as a national monument. The rally aims to promote awareness of the monument’s significance and encourage public engagement in the decision-making process.

"Public lands like Chuckwalla are for everyone to enjoy, and we want to preserve that," said a representative from the Trust.

As the debate continues, the White House has yet to confirm any changes regarding Chuckwalla's status. Local leaders remain in communication with federal officials to clarify the situation and ensure that the monument’s future is secure. Tune into NBC Palm Springs for continue coverage.
