Manny the Movie Guy Reviews Disney's New Snow White, Ash, and Indie Pick "Bob Trevino Likes It"
Three very different films hit theaters this weekend, and NBC Palm Springs' Manny the Movie Guy is sharing his thoughts.
First up is Disney’s Snow White, directed by Marc Webb. Rachel Zegler takes on the iconic title role alongside Gal Gadot as the Evil Queen. While Zegler delivers a charming performance, Manny says the film struggles with its identity. “It’s trying to please fans of the original while also appealing to a new generation,” he says. The result is a “half-hearted” remake with awkward CGI dwarves and a wasted opportunity to fully capitalize on Zegler’s talents. Manny gives Snow White two and a half out of four kisses.
Next is the visually stunning sci-fi horror Ash, starring Eiza González. Directed by Steven Ellison, also known as Flying Lotus, Ash follows a stranded explorer haunted by mysterious deaths aboard her spacecraft. The film borrows elements from classics like Alien and The Thing, but stands out with its creativity and psychological twists. Manny praises its gripping suspense and gives it three out of four kisses.
His pick of the week, however, is the touching indie dramedy Bob Trevino Likes It. Written and directed by Tracie Laymon, the story is inspired by her real-life experience and follows Lily Trevino, played by Euphoria’s Barbie Ferreira, as she forms a connection with a stranger named Bob Trevino (John Leguizamo) online. What begins as a search for her estranged father becomes an emotional journey about chosen family. “I didn’t like the film—I loved it,” Manny says, awarding it three and a half out of four kisses.
With something for everyone this weekend, Manny says to check your local listings and head to the theater.
