Junior Firebirds Head to State Championship With Support From Their Youngest Reporter
The Junior Firebirds are lacing up and hitting the road! The 12U and 16U teams are heading to San Jose for this weekend’s state championship tournament—and before they left, NBC Palm Springs’ junior reporter Madison Fleig paid them a visit at Acrisure Arena to learn more about the team’s spirit, preparation, and passion for the game.
Inside the Firebirds’ Iceplex, Madison caught up with coaches who shared just how meaningful the program has become. “I never thought I would have this opportunity in the desert to coach hockey,” one coach said. “This facility has brought not only my family, but countless families together. We’re all one big hockey family.”
Madison also hit the ice herself, getting a quick lesson in lifting the puck, and asked players the all-important question: “Do you have to hit people when you play hockey?” The answer? A very confident “Oh yeah.”
When it came to what it will take to bring home the championship, coaches emphasized teamwork, resilience, and heart. “You’ve got to fight hard,” one said. “You’ll face adversity, but you can overcome it—and that’s what takes these kids to the next level.”
With high hopes and strong support from their community—and from their youngest reporter—the Junior Firebirds are ready for the challenge ahead.
