Massive Dust Storm Sweeps Through Coachella Valley
Something you don’t see every day—an enormous dust storm barreled through the Coachella Valley, leaving behind reduced visibility, air quality concerns, and misery for allergy sufferers.
NBC Palm Springs editor Steve Sumrall captured the dramatic moment from 1,000 feet up on Tramway Road in Palm Springs. The towering wall of dust funneled through the valley, creating an eerie and intense scene as it moved through neighborhoods and highways.
The thick plume of airborne dust kicked up by gusty winds had many residents feeling the effects, particularly those with seasonal allergies. As particles filled the air, locals scrambled to close windows and stay indoors.
Though brief, the storm was a striking reminder of the valley’s desert climate and how quickly the weather can turn. Meteorologists are continuing to monitor wind conditions and advise residents to use caution when driving in low visibility and to consider wearing masks if outdoors.
