West Covina Beauty Store Employee Targeted in Theft After Autism Spotlight

Authorities are investigating a reported theft at a Southern California beauty store that appears to have targeted a vulnerable employee after her story was shared on social media.

Emily Estrada, an aspiring makeup artist, was recently celebrated as Employee of the Month at Infinite Glow Makeup Studio in West Covina. A video honoring her was shared online, where Emily openly shared that she is on the autism spectrum and asked for patience and understanding.

Shortly after that post, two women were captured on store surveillance video approaching Emily while she was working alone. They allegedly pretended to help her scan a gift card on their phone, distracted her, and walked out with approximately $400 in merchandise — without ever paying.

Emily described the situation as confusing and said it triggered a panic attack. She feared she might be fired over the incident, but her coworkers and boss instead rallied around her with support and compassion.

“In this world today, we're missing graciousness, we're missing kindness,” said the store’s CEO.

Emily’s mother shared her heartbreak over what happened, but also her pride in how her daughter is moving forward. The store’s leadership says their goal in sharing this story isn’t about punishment but about raising awareness and encouraging empathy.

“Treat people with more patience and more understanding,” Emily said.
