Pantry to the People: Community Unites to Tackle Food Insecurity

Today, a special event called Pantry to the People is bringing the community together to fight food insecurity. NBC Palm Springs and Sunline Transit Agency have joined forces to support two major local charities—the FIND Food Bank and the Community Food Bank at the center of Palm Springs.

Starting at 7 a.m. at Albertsons grocery stores in both Palm Desert and Palm Springs, this annual food drive offers a dual benefit. Seasonal residents are invited to clean out their pantries, while those in need can receive quality, prepackaged grocery bags sorted by Albertsons. The drive runs until 7 p.m., providing ample time for participation.

NBC Palm Springs news director David Reese reports live from Palm Springs, highlighting the ease and convenience of the event. Participants simply follow the giant Sunline bus parked in the lot as a clear marker for the donation and pick-up points. If residents find that their pantries are empty, they can easily purchase a prepackaged bag of groceries for about $10, ensuring that even those with limited supplies can contribute to their community.

The event is not only about food collection but also about giving back and supporting neighbors facing food insecurity. As Reese explained, hunger is a year-round issue affecting many, with local food banks like Find Food Bank providing assistance to over 100,000 people annually. The collaboration between NBC Palm Springs, Sunline Transit Agency, and Albertsons demonstrates a strong commitment to community support.

Edith Hernandez from Sunline emphasized that the agency's core mission is to help people, noting that initiatives like Pantry to the People are a natural extension of their service. With local support and a community-driven spirit, this event is set to make a significant impact in the fight against hunger.

Residents are encouraged to participate and help make a difference—whether by donating food from their pantries or by picking up a prepackaged bag to share with neighbors in need. This event is a testament to the community’s collective effort to support each other during challenging times.
