Migrant Students Prepare for State Debate

A group of 12 migrant students from the Coachella Valley School District is gearing up to compete in a statewide debate and speech tournament. The event, set to take place in Monterey Bay, will bring together hundreds of students from across California. These young scholars have been practicing tirelessly, honing their communication skills for one of the most anticipated events of the year. The tournament not only strengthens their debating skills but also gives them a platform to discuss issues they are passionate about. Ruby Valdez, an 8th grader, says the team offers her a chance to express herself freely. For 11th grader Jonas Duarte, the competition is an opportunity to discuss topics close to his heart, while also preparing for his future career. As an aspiring businessman, Jonas sees the value of effective communication. The students meet every week with their coaches, Jose Alvarez and Nereida Montez, both former migrant students. With less than a month until the tournament, the group is practicing day and night in hopes of bringing home a victory. This experience is not just about winning, but about the skills and confidence they gain along the way. The tournament provides an invaluable opportunity for personal growth and academic achievement. The students are excited to represent the Coachella Valley at the competition.
