Volunteers Honor Veterans with Flags at Little Rock National Cemetery for Memorial Day
In preparation for Memorial Day, volunteers have placed hundreds of American flags in front of grave sites at Little Rock National Cemetery. The act is a moving tribute to the sacrifice of U.S. military veterans and serves as a poignant reminder of the true meaning of this federal holiday.
Kayla Christian reports from the cemetery, highlighting the sense of unity and patriotism that brought dozens of people together. “We’ve got to remember that. We can’t let that stop. And we’ve got to make sure our children, our children’s children, remember what Memorial Day is all about,” one participant shared.
Among the volunteers was U.S. Air Force veteran John Penrod, whose family has a long history of military service. “I wanted to come out and pay my respect to the veterans,” he said.
Rally Point Nonprofit Council Executive Director Jeff Watts echoed these sentiments, emphasizing the importance of remembering the sacrifices that have secured the nation’s freedoms. “We’re a blessed nation, and one of the things about being a blessed nation, sometimes we forget the hardships that put us in a position where we are blessed,” Watts said. “Each flag represents a life, so make sure you do it right. It’s that symbol of unity that says, okay, we are one nation under God. The flag is freedom.”
The tribute extended a challenge to others to participate in honoring veterans and ensuring that their sacrifices are not forgotten. “Every one of these veterans out here deserve our respect,” one volunteer remarked.
As a reminder, some local offices and businesses will be closed tomorrow in observance of Memorial Day. In the Coachella Valley, post offices will not offer regular mail delivery or retail services. Federal and state offices, including the DMV, will be closed, as will banks, financial institutions, public schools, colleges, and most courthouses. Normal operations will resume on Tuesday, May 27.
