DEA Marijuana Bust Sparks Fear in East Valley Farmworker Communities

A federal DEA marijuana bust that happened today caused widespread panic among East Valley farmworkers despite the operation not being immigration-related. Hundreds of field workers reportedly hid in the under extreme heat afraid to leave their job sites. In Mecca, two farmworkers took refuge with strangers, fearing potential raids. They described seeing numerous agents surrounding the fields, prompting immediate fear and confusion. The families of the workers expressed concern about possible separation, saying the overwhelming presence of law enforcement left them no choice but to hide. Agencies spotted included U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services, escalating anxiety in the immigrant-heavy region. Local nonprofit Inland Congregations United For Change (ICUC) responded swiftly by delivering water and supplies to hidden workers enduring triple-digit temperatures. ICUC representatives condemned the fear instilled in essential agricultural laborers. They emphasized the community's need for reassurance, protection, and sustained aid. For those whose loved ones were detained, TODEC has opened a helpline. ICUC has pledged to continue working with other groups to ensure food and resources reach all affected families.
