Juneteenth Unity Classic and Action Sports Spectacle Highlight Busy Weekend in the Valley

The NBC Palm Springs Sports Desk with Tim O’Brien, brought to you by Agua Caliente Casinos, highlights two major events making waves across the Valley this weekend.

First, in Desert Hot Springs, the Juneteenth Unity Classic brought together athletes of all ages and skill levels for a special basketball event honoring freedom and unity. Hosted by the True League, the morning event at the Desert Hot Springs Recreation Center celebrated the spirit of Juneteenth through community competition. One of the event’s organizers, who relocated to the Valley from Los Angeles 16 years ago, shared that he saw a need for this type of outlet. Drawing on his experience with the Boys and Girls Club, he helped bring the program to life for local youth.

Meanwhile, the Palm Springs Surf Club is preparing for an action sports showcase unlike anything seen before in the desert. Saturday’s schedule includes skateboarding and BMX warm-ups from 3 to 5 p.m., followed by a meet-and-greet with 12 professional athletes. At 6 p.m., athlete interviews begin, leading up to Colby Raha’s much-anticipated record-breaking motocross jump attempt at 7:20 p.m. A surf demonstration in the wave pool and a special screening of Raha’s new film will close out the night, wrapping just before 10 p.m.

In MLB news, the Los Angeles Angels stunned the New York Yankees by taking three out of four games in the Bronx. Angels outfielder Taylor Ward launched a home run, and manager Ron Washington continues to draw praise for the team's performance. The Angels are now 6–1 on the road against last year’s World Series teams — the Yankees and the Dodgers — a major feat for the Halos.
