Cathedral City Greenlights AI Cameras to Boost Code Enforcement Efficiency
Cathedral City is turning to artificial intelligence in its mission to keep the community clean and code-compliant. On Wednesday night, the City Council unanimously approved a more than $200,000, three-year contract with City Detect to implement two AI-powered cameras mounted on code enforcement vehicles. The goal: identify and expedite responses to common code violations such as graffiti, trash accumulation, illegal parking, and unmaintained landscaping.
Code Compliance Manager Justin Gardiner explains the new cameras can drastically reduce the manpower and time needed to complete inspections across city neighborhoods.
Council members largely supported the move but did raise concerns about resident privacy. In response, Gardiner emphasized that the system is secure and access to footage is strictly limited. "Everything is safeguarded. It all gets uploaded to the City's Detect web based, cloud based system. We have several different security measures in place on their side that they're in control of." he said.
The city hopes to secure funding next month and begin installation by the end of August. If successful, the return on investment could equal the output of three full-time employees, helping Cathedral City reach its long-term beautification goals more efficiently and effectively.
