Helihydrant Speeds Up Wildfire Response in Banning Pass as Wolf Fire Burns 2,400 Acres

Firefighters battling the Wolf Fire in the Banning Pass have a new weapon in their arsenal: a helihydrant, designed to drastically cut water refill time for helicopters fighting wildfires from the air.

The helihydrant is a stationary tank that allows helicopters to refill in just seconds, eliminating the need to search for nearby lakes or land, refuel, and then return to the fire. The first of seven planned systems was installed last month in Cabazon—and it's already proving vital in real-time response.

As of Wednesday night, the Wolf Fire has burned approximately 2,400 acres and is 40% contained, according to CAL FIRE. Evacuation orders and warnings remain in place, affecting nearly 15,000 residents. Officials say the fire is threatening over 4,200 structures.

With the region's dry conditions and high winds, any tool that speeds up firefighting efforts can help protect lives and property.
