DEA Raid Triggers Panic in East Valley; Farmworkers Hide in Fields Amid Triple-Digit Heat

What began as a federal drug operation turned into a day of fear and chaos for hundreds of farmworkers across the Eastern Coachella Valley.

On Wednesday, a convoy of military-style vehicles moved through Indio, Coachella, Thermal, and Mecca, part of a large-scale DEA-led raid targeting illegal marijuana grow operations. The bust, which spanned 787 acres and led to the arrest of 70 to 75 undocumented immigrants, was the result of a years-long investigation by the DEA’s Los Angeles field division.

But the visible show of force—armored vehicles, federal agents, and helicopters—sparked widespread panic among local farmworkers and families. Many feared it was an immigration sweep, similar to actions recently seen in Los Angeles.

In Mecca, NBC Palm Springs reporter Antonio Marquez met a family who took in two farmworkers fleeing the fields.

“I felt scared seeing the large amount of agents roaming outside of the fields while I was working,” one farmworker told us. “They were stationed at different entryways… everyone started to panic and hide. I called my children and a friend to pick me up. I’ve been hiding in her home for hours. I’m scared to leave.”

The fear rippled throughout the region, with many reportedly hiding in the triple-digit heat, uncertain of who the agents were or whether immigration enforcement was involved.

Congressman Raul Ruiz called the operation traumatic for the community. “You have farmworkers who either left work or didn’t go at all because they were afraid. And they were outside in 113-degree weather,” he said.

Local nonprofit Inland Congregations United for Change (ICUC) mobilized quickly to provide aid. Volunteers brought water, food, and reassurance to rural areas where workers were hiding.

“We came out to stand with them in solidarity,” one ICUC representative said. “To provide them with water, food, accompaniment, and to assure them they will be safe. It’s unacceptable—creating mass fear among the people who grow the food we depend on.”

As of now, no additional immigration enforcement actions have been confirmed in the valley. Officials emphasize that this operation was solely focused on marijuana enforcement.
