Cathedral City Man Sentenced to 50 Years to Life for Teen’s Murder

A Cathedral City man will spend the rest of his life in prison for the fatal shooting of a teenager.

On Friday, a judge sentenced 26-year-old Juan Alfredo Landeros Garcia to 50 years to life following his conviction earlier this summer for the murder of 17-year-old Isaiah Guerra. Jurors found Garcia guilty in June after a trial that detailed the violent encounter.

According to prosecutors, the incident unfolded when Guerra pulled up to Garcia while he was walking to a relative’s home. The two exchanged words through the car window before Garcia pulled out a semiautomatic handgun. He fired 10 rounds into the vehicle, fatally wounding the teen.

Investigators said Guerra died at the scene. Garcia, who had no prior felony convictions, was arrested shortly after the shooting.

The sentencing closes a case that shocked Cathedral City and left Guerra’s family grieving the loss of a young life cut short. During the trial, prosecutors argued the shooting was unprovoked and demonstrated a clear intent to kill. Defense attorneys did not dispute that Garcia fired the weapon but sought leniency based on his lack of a criminal record.

Garcia will serve his sentence in state prison, with the earliest possibility of parole decades away.
