Desert View Power Plant Faces Shutdown Amid Toxic Waste Concerns

The Desert View Power Plant is scheduled to shut down operations by September 30, but nearby residents remain deeply concerned about what comes next. Community advocates fear that without a clear decommissioning plan, hazardous waste and toxic materials left behind could pose serious health risks.

EPA records show the plant amassed more than 2,600 air quality violations and toxic emissions between 2017 and 2021. Advocates worry that leftover ash piles, heavy metals, and even asbestos could become airborne if the site is not properly cleaned and monitored. Residents living less than a mile from the plant say they want assurances that both short-term and long-term safety measures will be in place.

Greenleaf Power, the company responsible for the facility, has not yet detailed its plans for cleanup or for securing the site after closure. Community leaders stress that the expiration of the plant’s permit may be a victory, but the battle for safety is far from over. They are calling for collaboration among Greenleaf Power, landowners, and county officials to ensure protections for the surrounding neighborhoods.

NBC Palm Springs reached out to Greenleaf Power for clarification on the next steps, but the company has not responded. For residents, the uncertainty surrounding the shutdown has only intensified calls for transparency and accountability.
