For nearly two decades, the Darth Vader hot air balloon has been one of the most recognizable and beloved attractions at the Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta. Now, the iconic “Star Wars” special shape faces an uncertain future as its fabric begins to deteriorate after years of flight.

Pilot Benoit Lambert, who has flown the Darth Vader balloon since 2007, says the wear and tear are showing. “The balloon is 19 years old,” Lambert explained. “You can see it start to behold because the fabric starts to be deflated on the neck. But it’s part of the process.”

Despite the balloon’s age, Lambert and his crew are determined to find a way to keep the Sith Lord flying. “We are planning a way to continue the story,” he said. The Darth Vader balloon has become more than just a fan favorite — it’s a global phenomenon that attracts admirers of all ages.

“I saw the stormtroopers with their lightsabers and their guides and I was like, we need to follow them,” said first-time attendee Katrina Bustillos, who sports a tattoo of the Death Star. “As soon as I get some time, I’m going to get online and donate. This is something magical that we need to see every year.”

The balloon’s legacy continues to inspire “Star Wars” enthusiasts and festivalgoers alike, with many pledging their support to rebuild it. Lambert remains hopeful about its return. “Do you think he’ll make a return? I hope so. Yes, that’s my plan.”
