The Coachella Valley is experiencing a heat wave, with temperatures expected to reach 96 degrees Thursday, according to Weatherman Pablo Alsina.

The forecasted high is 10 degrees above the normal October temperature of 86 degrees and just five degrees short of the record of 101 degrees set in 1961.

Clear skies greeted residents this morning with cool temperatures, but conditions are expected to heat up rapidly. By 9 a.m., temperatures will reach 74 degrees, climbing to 94-96 degrees by 3 p.m.

Despite the high temperatures, low humidity levels should provide some relief. The dew point is at 36 degrees, meaning the air will feel dry rather than heavy or muggy. However, light winds—currently 8 mph in Palm Springs and 3 mph in Whitewater—will offer little cooling effect.
