Seasonal Depression Can Cast a Shadow Over the Holidays, Experts Say
It is Christmas Eve, and while many people are busy with last-minute shopping or baking their final batch of holiday cookies, for others, this time of year can be far from joyful.
Seasonal depression, also known as Seasonal Affective Disorder, affects many individuals during the winter months. According to Dr. Laura Halpin, a psychiatrist with Kaiser Permanente, the holidays can intensify emotional struggles due to financial pressure, time constraints, and complicated family dynamics.
“For some people, going home for the holidays brings stress or painful memories rather than comfort,” Dr. Halpin explained. “Grief, loss, and unmet expectations can all contribute to feelings of sadness and isolation.”
Dennis and Michelle V-Hill know this struggle all too well. The couple has experienced profound loss, having lost both a grandmother and a mother in recent years. This holiday season marks their third Christmas navigating life after that loss.
“This time of year definitely brings up emotions,” Michelle Vigil said. “Talking about it yesterday really made everything feel heavier. It reminds you of what’s missing.”
Dr. Halpin says coping with seasonal depression starts with small but intentional steps. She recommends getting exposure to sunlight whenever possible, even if it’s as simple as sitting by a window or opening curtains during the day. Physical activity, such as walking or going to the gym, can also have a significant positive impact on mood.
Another powerful tool, she says, is communication.
“Talking things through—whether with family, friends, or a professional—can make a huge difference,” Dr. Halpin noted.
For the Vigil family, leaning on one another has been key to getting through the holidays.
Mental health experts emphasize that no one has to face seasonal depression alone. Reaching out, staying connected, and practicing self-care can help make this challenging time of year more manageable.
