CSUSB’s FLOWS Program Expands Environmental Training Through Palm Desert Partnership
Cal State San Bernardino’s FLOWS program is expanding its environmental workforce training through a new partnership with the university’s Palm Desert campus, strengthening its presence in desert communities and enhancing opportunities for student engagement.
The program connects CSU students with hands-on fieldwork, research, and service projects alongside tribal nations, community organizations, and water professionals. Through these partnerships, students gain practical experience in water management, land stewardship, and climate resilience.
As part of the initiative, FLOWS fellows have worked with the Agua Caliente Band of Cahuilla Indians, the Native American Land Conservancy, and the Audubon Society. Their projects focus on studying regional water systems and supporting habitat restoration efforts across the Coachella Valley and surrounding desert areas.
University officials say the expanded partnership allows students to better understand local environmental challenges while contributing meaningful service to the community. By blending classroom instruction with real-world projects, the program aims to prepare the next generation of environmental professionals.
Program leaders add that FLOWS not only builds technical skills but also encourages collaboration, cultural awareness, and long-term stewardship of natural resources in desert regions.
