The Ancient Megastructure Built for Eternity and Still Standing 1,700 Years Later in Sri Lanka

In the heart of Sri Lanka’s north-central plains stands one of the ancient world’s most astonishing achievements: Jetavanaramaya, a colossal Buddhist stupa built in the early fourth century and still towering over the sacred city of Anuradhapura nearly 1,700 years later.

When it was completed around 301 CE, Jetavanaramaya ranked as the third-largest man-made structure on Earth, surpassed only by the Great Pyramids of Giza. Constructed using an estimated 93 million baked mud bricks, the dome-shaped monument originally rose to about 400 feet, making it one of the tallest structures of the ancient world. Even today, after centuries of collapse, abandonment, and restoration, it remains the largest brick structure ever built by volume.

Jetavanaramaya was the centerpiece of the Jetavana Vihara monastic complex, once home to hundreds of monks. Every structure in the complex was deliberately oriented toward the stupa, reinforcing its spiritual and symbolic importance. Pilgrims continue to walk its perimeter, following rituals that have endured for more than two millennia.

Unlike stone pyramids, the stupa’s mud-brick construction posed enormous engineering challenges. Ancient builders carefully tested soil conditions, relied on bamboo scaffolding and coir rope, and likely used elephants and carts to transport materials. Its hemispherical design helped distribute weight efficiently, allowing it to withstand earthquakes, monsoon rains, and the passage of time.

Jetavanaramaya’s history is also marked by religious and political complexity. Associated with Mahayana-leaning Buddhist traditions, much of its story was gradually lost as Sri Lanka remained predominantly Theravada Buddhist. Jungle growth and shifting priorities buried the monument for centuries, leaving it largely unknown outside the region.

Nearby, the gleaming white stupa of Ruwanwelisaya draws larger crowds today, but Jetavanaramaya remains unmatched in scale and ambition. Archaeologists say no structure of comparable size was ever attempted again in Sri Lanka or Southeast Asia.

Still standing after nearly 17 centuries, Jetavanaramaya endures as a reminder that some of humanity’s greatest architectural achievements were shaped not from stone, but from earth, devotion, and extraordinary ingenuity.
