New Surveillance Images Provide Major Break in Search for Missing Mother Nancy Guthrie

New surveillance video and images released by the FBI are providing the most significant breakthrough so far in the search for missing Tucson resident Nancy Guthrie.

The 84-year-old woman disappeared in the early morning hours of February 1, and investigators believe the footage — captured by a doorbell camera outside her home — may offer vital clues about a suspected abduction. Authorities say the images show an armed, masked individual approaching the property.

Since the footage was released publicly, the Pima County Sheriff’s Department has received thousands of tips. Investigators are urging nearby residents to review and submit any video recordings that might show vehicles, pedestrians, or unusual activity in the area.

Law enforcement experts say several details in the footage could help identify the person.

One of the most notable features is the way the suspect carries a firearm. Analysts say the holster placement and the mismatch between the holster and the weapon suggest the individual may not have formal training with firearms.

The suspect is also fully covered, wearing gloves, a mask, and layered clothing. Experts believe the clothing may have been chosen to prevent leaving DNA or fingerprints behind. Investigators are examining each item — including a backpack believed to be a widely sold retail brand — in hopes of tracing where it was purchased.

Authorities have also recovered gloves near the area, though it is not yet confirmed whether they belong to the person seen in the video.

Experts say the suspect’s movement could be one of the most telling clues. The video captures the person walking and attempting to cover the camera. Specialists say a person’s gait can often be recognizable to those who know them, even when their face is concealed.

The footage also shows the individual trying to block the camera first with a hand and then with shrubbery taken from the yard — something experts say may suggest limited planning or experience.

Investigators hope the combination of clothing, movement, and behavior captured in the footage will lead to new leads and, ultimately, answers about what happened to Nancy Guthrie.
