Obama condemns ICE actions in Minnesota, compares enforcement tactics to authoritarian regimes
Former President Barack Obama is strongly criticizing federal immigration enforcement operations in Minnesota, describing the conduct of Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents as dangerous and comparable to actions seen in authoritarian governments.
Speaking in an interview released Saturday, Obama said the deployment of thousands of federal agents across Minneapolis and St. Paul raised serious concerns about oversight, accountability, and civil liberties. He pointed to videos showing aggressive enforcement tactics, including agents pulling people from homes and using crowd-control measures against demonstrators.
Obama described the operations as unprecedented in modern American life and praised residents who protested peacefully despite freezing conditions. He said public demonstrations and community monitoring of immigration enforcement reflect citizens standing up for democratic norms.
The enforcement surge followed a series of high-profile incidents involving federal agents, including the killings of Renee Good and Alex Pretti in January. Those events sparked widespread protests and intensified scrutiny of immigration enforcement tactics. Federal officials have since announced the end of the months-long immigration surge in Minnesota.
Obama also criticized what he described as deteriorating political discourse, pointing to inflammatory rhetoric and behavior in public life. He said restoring norms of respect, rule of law, and accountability depends on citizens speaking out against conduct they find unacceptable.
His remarks mark another instance of the former president taking a more active public role in political debates after largely stepping back from the spotlight in recent years.
