Velo Vets helps disabled veterans stay active and connected through cycling community
A nonprofit in Sierra Vista, Arizona, is helping disabled veterans rediscover the joy of cycling while building strong community connections.
Velo Vets was founded in 2017 with a simple mission — help veterans stay active, get outdoors, and connect with one another through group rides. For some participants, physical disabilities once made cycling seem impossible. Now, the organization provides opportunities for veterans to ride again and enjoy the physical and emotional benefits that come with it.
The group has grown to more than 100 members who meet twice a week for 15-mile rides. Each outing includes time for coffee and conversation, which organizers say is just as important as the exercise itself.
Leaders say social interaction can be limited for many disabled veterans, making shared activities especially meaningful. Members say the camaraderie and support from fellow veterans helps create a sense of belonging that extends beyond the ride.
The group is also honoring the legacy of co-founder Stu Carter, who died unexpectedly of a heart attack during a ride in November 2025. Memorial rides are planned this year to celebrate his life and dedication to the organization.
Velo Vets continues to grow, offering veterans a place to stay active, connect with others, and find renewed purpose through cycling.
