Indian Wells Secures $5 Million in Federal Funding for Whitewater Channel Flood Protection Project

City leaders in Indian Wells have secured an additional $5 million in federal funding to advance the Whitewater Channel Lining Project, an infrastructure effort designed to reduce flood risks and protect the surrounding community. The funding was included in a federal transportation and housing appropriations bill supported by Ken Calvert.

The project focuses on reinforcing portions of the stormwater channel connected to the Whitewater River to better handle heavy runoff during major storm events. Officials say strengthening the channel will help prevent erosion, reduce the likelihood of flooding, and improve overall safety for nearby neighborhoods.

Once completed, crews will have reinforced more than 7,000 feet of channel. City leaders note that the improvements not only protect existing homes and businesses but also support planned growth in the area, including future senior and affordable housing developments.

Local officials describe the investment as a long-term solution that boosts resilience while safeguarding critical infrastructure. By upgrading the stormwater system now, the city hopes to minimize damage during severe weather and provide greater peace of mind for residents and property owners alike.
