Who Is Colin McDonald? Inside Trump’s Pick to Lead New DOJ National Fraud Enforcement Division
Colin McDonald, a veteran federal prosecutor, is stepping into the national spotlight as the nominee to lead a newly created Justice Department division focused on fraud enforcement — a key initiative tied to President Donald Trump’s push for a governmentwide “war on fraud.”
During his confirmation hearing before the Senate Judiciary Committee, McDonald emphasized his commitment to following the law and evidence above all else. He described himself as a career prosecutor guided by facts, but stopped short of directly addressing whether he would refuse a presidential request to prosecute political adversaries — a concern raised by several Democratic lawmakers.
The new National Fraud Enforcement Division was established to expand the federal government’s response to large-scale fraud, including alleged abuses involving Medicaid and SNAP programs. The administration has highlighted a major fraud investigation in Minnesota — potentially involving billions of dollars — as a central focus.
McDonald previously spent more than a decade as a federal prosecutor in California’s Southern District before moving to Washington to work in the office of Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche. There, he handled a wide range of law enforcement policy matters and helped lead the department’s Weaponization Working Group.
The new division’s structure and oversight have already drawn scrutiny. Some legal experts and lawmakers question whether it duplicates work already handled by existing Justice Department offices. Others have raised concerns about political influence after Vice President JD Vance said the effort would operate with White House supervision as part of a broader governmentwide initiative.
McDonald told senators his office would complement existing fraud enforcement units and work with federal, state, and local partners regardless of political affiliation. Still, some lawmakers remain skeptical about how independent the division will be.
