Cabot’s Pueblo Museum Hosts Free Mata Ortiz Pottery Festival with Live Demonstrations and Auction

Cabot's Pueblo Museum is hosting a special cultural event this weekend featuring award-winning artists from Mata Ortiz. The free event began today and runs through Sunday, offering visitors a rare chance to see master potters demonstrate traditional techniques passed down through generations.

Guests can watch artisans create pottery entirely by hand, without modern tools or equipment. If weather conditions allow, the artists will also fire pottery outdoors using ancient ground-firing methods — a process rarely seen outside the region where the craft originated.

After the firing, finished pieces will be auctioned live. Proceeds support both the museum and the participating artists, making the event both a cultural showcase and a fundraiser.

Organizers say the gathering highlights three generations of master potters, allowing visitors to see how techniques and styles have evolved over time. The pottery tradition remains a vital part of the economy and identity of Mata Ortiz and the surrounding Casa Grande region in the Mexican state of Chihuahua.

Second- and third-generation artisans are leading demonstrations throughout the weekend, offering an up-close look at a craft rooted in centuries of tradition.
