Day One at the BNP Paribas Open Delivers Upsets and Comebacks
Match play officially got underway at the BNP Paribas Open on Wednesday at the Indian Wells Tennis Garden, and day one didn't disappoint.
Former Indian Wells and US Open champion Bianca Andreescu was the day's biggest casualty. The 24-year-old Canadian, who famously won the title here in 2019, couldn't recapture that form against Russian qualifier Camila Rakimova, falling in three sets — with Rakimova closing out the final set 6-1. Rakimova now moves on to face newly crowned Australian Open champion Elena Rybakina.
On the men's side, Italian Matteo Berrettini picked up his first ATP Tour win in nearly 11 months, fighting back from a set down to beat Frenchman Adrian Mannarino. The match took everything out of him — Berrettini collapsed on the court with cramps after match point. He'll face fourth seed Alexander Zverev next for a spot in the third round.
Brazilian teenager João Fonseca gave the home crowd plenty to cheer about, taking out Raphael Collignon in straight sets — winning the second set 6-4 with 30 winners on the day. He faces Karen Khachanov in the next round.
And 38-year-old Gaël Monfils, who is playing what many expect to be his final season on tour, continued his farewell run with a straight-sets win over Canadian qualifier Alexis Galarneau. Monfils will next face Félix Auger-Aliassime for a spot in the third round.
