CVUSD Board Approves Resolution Allowing Dozens of Layoffs
The Coachella Valley Unified School District Board of Education approved a resolution Wednesday night that clears the way for dozens of potential layoffs, following emotional public comments from parents, teachers, and staff.
Resolution 2026-32 identifies up to 41 full-time certificated non-management positions that could be eliminated. The largest impact would come from the potential reduction of 30 multiple-subject teaching positions, which typically serve elementary classrooms.
The district also listed three management roles that could be cut, including coordinators for college and career programs, early learner initiatives, and migrant education services.
During the special board meeting, families and employees voiced concerns about how the layoffs could affect classroom stability and already strained staffing levels. Several staff members shared personal stories about the uncertainty they now face as the district moves forward with the cuts.
The layoffs come as the district works through a long-term financial recovery plan. Officials previously approved a $254 million budget stabilization plan spanning the next three years, which includes cutting $9 million from the 2026–2027 school year budget and $8 million in each of the following two years.
The district’s financial challenges have also drawn attention from local leaders, including Jeff Gonzalez, who previously requested a full audit of the district’s financial management.
District leaders say the difficult decisions are part of ongoing efforts to stabilize finances while maintaining educational services for students.
