Coco Gauff Retires with Injury as Sinner, Tiafoe Advance at Indian Wells

The BNP Paribas Open at the Indian Wells Tennis Garden heads into round three Monday morning after a dramatic Sunday that saw Coco Gauff forced out of the tournament with an injury.

Gauff was down 5-2 in the first set against Alex Eala when she called for the trainer with an injury to her left arm. Despite receiving treatment, she retired just a few games into the second set, ending her Indian Wells run early. Eala, clearly conflicted about the win, said afterward, "I really didn't want to win this way, but this is still a really big moment for me." The Filipino player now faces Linda Nosková in the round of 16.

World No. 1 Jannik Sinner, still chasing his first Indian Wells title, dominated Denis Shapovalov in straight sets — wrapping up the win 6-2 in the second set. The win marks Sinner's 216th hard court victory since 2021, more than any other player on the ATP Tour. "He's an informed player, so I'm very happy about today's performance," Sinner said. "I tried to stay solid on the baseline but also a bit more aggressive in the second set." He advances to the fourth round.

On the men's side, Francis Tiafoe got some revenge, defeating Flavio Cobolli in straight sets — dropping just three games — after losing to him in the Acapulco final just weeks ago. It's the second time in his career Tiafoe has reached the fourth round at Indian Wells.
