Apple Warns iPhone Users: Update Now to Block Russian and Chinese Hackers

Apple is urging iPhone users to update their software after researchers identified hacking programs from Russia and China that can break into older iPhones and collect personal data.

The two programs, called DarkSword and Coruna, can give hackers deep, remote access to a victim's phone and allow them to search through its contents. However, an Apple spokesperson says the programs only affect devices running older software, and that staying current on system updates is the best way to block an attack.

Apple's latest operating system, iOS 26, was released in September and can stop both hacking tools from working. For users with older iPhone models that cannot fully upgrade to iOS 26, Apple took the unusual step last week of releasing a special, limited update specifically designed to block the two programs.
