Iran-Linked Hackers Breach FBI Director Kash Patel’s Personal Email, FBI Says No Classified Data Exposed

Hackers linked to Iran have breached the personal email account of FBI Director Kash Patel, according to officials, raising new concerns about cybersecurity threats targeting high-level U.S. leaders.

Authorities say the hackers accessed personal emails, photos, and documents dating back more than a decade and later published some of the materials online. However, officials emphasized that no classified or government systems were compromised in the breach.

Cybersecurity experts reviewing the incident described it as a breach of personal information rather than a penetration of FBI infrastructure.

The FBI confirmed the incident and says it is actively working to identify those responsible. The agency is offering a $10 million reward for information leading to the identification of the group known as the “Handala Hack Team,” which has previously targeted U.S. officials.

The breach comes amid heightened tensions and warnings from U.S. intelligence agencies about potential cyber retaliation tied to ongoing conflict in the Middle East.

Officials say this is not the first time Patel has been targeted. In 2024, Iranian-linked hackers also accessed some of his personal communications as part of a broader campaign targeting U.S. political figures.

The latest incident underscores ongoing concerns about the vulnerability of personal accounts, even for top government officials, as cyber threats continue to evolve.
