Dust Advisory Extended for Coachella Weekend as High Winds Hit Coachella Valley

A windblown dust advisory has been extended through Sunday morning for much of the Coachella Valley, as strong winds continue to impact the region during Coachella weekend.

According to the South Coast Air Quality Management District, gusts could reach up to 45 miles per hour, creating hazardous air quality conditions across multiple valley cities.

Health experts are urging residents and festivalgoers to take precautions, especially those with allergies or respiratory conditions. Wearing a mask—particularly an N95—is recommended to help protect against dust, allergens, and other particles in the air.

Officials also advise bringing any necessary medications, including those for asthma or allergies, before heading out to the festival.

While masks may not be the most comfortable option in a festival setting, experts say they can significantly reduce exposure to harmful dust and airborne irritants.

Residents are encouraged to stay indoors when possible, keep windows closed, and limit exposure to outdoor conditions during peak winds. Drivers are also being asked to slow down on dirt roads to help minimize dust in the air.
