Therapy Dogs Expanding Support for Recovery at Betty Ford Center

A unique form of healing is making a powerful impact at the Betty Ford Center.

As patients work through the challenges of addiction recovery, therapy dogs are playing an increasingly important role in the process offering comfort, connection, and emotional support.

Now, the center is expanding the program by bringing in more dogs, including rescue animals, to reach even more people in treatment.

For patients like Marine Corps veteran John Malcolm, the presence of these animals can make a meaningful difference during some of the toughest moments in recovery.

Staff say therapy dogs help boost morale, reduce anxiety, and motivate patients to stay engaged in their treatment. Their unconditional companionship often creates a calming environment that traditional therapy alone can’t always achieve.

The program has been a part of the center for years, dating back to its first therapy dog, Irish, who helped set the foundation for animal-assisted healing.

Today, leaders say the impact remains just as strong, if not stronger, as more dogs join the effort.

For many patients, these animals become a symbol of hope, reminding them they’re not alone as they work toward recovery in the Coachella Valley.
