Europe launches age verification app to protect kids online

European leaders are taking a major step to better protect children online with the rollout of a new age verification app designed to confirm users’ ages without exposing personal data.

The app, announced by European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, will act as a digital ID, allowing users to verify whether they meet age requirements for websites and apps without sharing sensitive details like their birthdate.

Users will upload a passport or ID card to confirm their age through the app. Platforms can then check if someone meets a minimum age threshold—such as 16 or 18—without accessing any additional personal information.

The move comes as governments around the world increase pressure on tech companies to better protect minors online. Concerns have grown following recent court rulings that found major platforms liable for harm caused to young users, including addictive features and failures to prevent abuse.

Supporters say the app offers a simple, centralized solution that removes the burden from individual platforms while prioritizing privacy. European officials claim it will meet some of the highest privacy standards globally.

Still, some tech companies have raised concerns about how age verification systems collect and manage user data. Debates continue over whether platforms, app stores, or governments should be responsible for verifying ages.

The app is expected to roll out soon across European Union countries, with each nation able to adapt it based on local laws and regulations.
