Netflix co-founder Reed Hastings stepping down from board after decades of leadership

Netflix co-founder Reed Hastings is stepping down from the company’s board of directors, signaling the end of a historic chapter for the streaming giant.

Hastings, who helped launch Netflix in 1997, will not seek re-election when his term expires in June. His departure comes less than three years after he stepped down as co-CEO and transitioned into the role of executive chairman.

Under Hastings’ leadership, Netflix transformed the entertainment industry—first by pioneering DVD-by-mail rentals and later by revolutionizing streaming. The company also became a major force in original programming, competing directly with traditional Hollywood studios.

Since stepping away from day-to-day leadership, Netflix has been run by co-CEOs Ted Sarandos and Greg Peters, who have continued to expand the platform’s reach. The company now boasts more than 300 million paid subscribers worldwide.

Netflix has also evolved in recent years, cracking down on password sharing, expanding into live sports and podcasting, and introducing ad-supported subscription options.

Company leaders say Hastings’ decision to step down is not tied to any recent business developments but rather a natural progression as he shifts focus to philanthropy and other ventures.

Hastings said his legacy at Netflix centers on building a culture of innovation and long-term success—one that he believes will continue without him.

As Netflix looks ahead, the company says it will begin reshaping its board while continuing to build on the foundation Hastings helped create.
