Betty Yee Suspends Campaign for California Governor, Reshaping Crowded June Primary

SACRAMENTO, Calif. — The field of candidates vying to lead the Golden State continues to shrink. Former State Controller Betty Yee announced Monday that she is suspending her campaign for California Governor, marking the second high-profile Democratic exit in just over a week.
Yee’s withdrawal follows the departure of former U.S. Representative Eric Swalwell, who left the race following allegations of sexual assault, which he has denied. While Swalwell was considered a front-runner, Yee struggled to gain momentum, lagging in fundraising and failing to break into the top tier of candidates in recent polling.
A seasoned fiscal expert, Yee had pitched herself as "Boring Betty," a candidate focused on pragmatic solutions rather than political soundbites. Despite her exit, her name will remain on the June 2 primary ballot, as mail-in ballots are scheduled to be sent to voters in early May.
The race to replace outgoing Governor Gavin Newsom remains historically crowded and highly unpredictable. Yee’s departure leaves six established Democrats and two leading Republicans at the top of a ballot that still features more than 50 names.
The primary remains a high-stakes "top-two" system, where only the leading two vote-getters advance to the November general election, regardless of their political party. This has led to concerns among Democrats that a fractured field could result in a party shutout.
Recent data from the Public Policy Institute of California shows a tight cluster at the top of the pack. Leading contenders include Democrats Tom Steyer and former U.S. Rep. Katie Porter, alongside Republicans Steve Hilton and Riverside County Sheriff Chad Bianco.
As the June 2 primary approaches, Valley voters should keep a close eye on these shifts. With the state's highest office up for grabs, the next few weeks will be critical as candidates scramble to consolidate support in a race that—until now—many voters have yet to fully engage with.
