17-Acre Vegetation Fire Burns Near Mecca Overnight, Contained by Midnight
A vegetation fire broke out near the intersection of Avenue 70 and Lincoln in Mecca Wednesday night, burning through 17 acres before crews were able to stop its spread just before midnight.
Cal Fire says the blaze ignited around 9 p.m. and quickly became a challenge as strong winds pushed the fire and slowed firefighting efforts. Additional equipment was called in to help crews manage the conditions. One abandoned structure was in the area, though firefighters were able to protect it. No evacuations were ordered and no injuries were reported.
By midnight, Cal Fire reported that the fire's forward spread had been stopped and the acreage mapped at 17 acres. Firefighters remained on scene overnight to mop up remaining embers.
Cal Fire has not announced a cause at this time.
