Cathedral City Man Arrested After Shooting Son in Argument Over Alcohol
A Cathedral City man is in custody today following a violent domestic dispute that left his son injured and a neighbor narrowly escaping harm. The incident occurred around 10:30 p.m. Wednesday night at a residence on Tortuga Road, prompting a massive law enforcement response that lasted well into the early morning hours.
According to Cathedral City Police, the violence erupted during a heated argument between the father and son. The son reported to investigators that his father, whom he described as an alcoholic and a gun enthusiast, became enraged when the son refused to go out and purchase more alcohol for him. In the ensuing confrontation, the father allegedly opened fire.
The victim was grazed by a bullet, but officials say the situation could have been much more tragic. After striking the son, the bullet traveled through a wall and into another bedroom, nearly hitting a woman who was sleeping at the time. Despite the trauma of the event, the son expressed a desire for his father to find a path to recovery, stating he hoped the outcome would lead to rehab or the help his father clearly needs.
The aftermath of the shooting led to a prolonged standoff with police. Detectives and the Desert Regional SWAT team surrounded the home, repeatedly ordering the suspect to surrender. While it initially appeared to be a barricade situation, police later discovered that the suspect was not intentionally hiding; rather, he was reportedly so intoxicated that he was physically unable to walk out of the residence on his own.
Law enforcement eventually gained entry and took the suspect into custody. He was first transported to a local hospital for medical clearance before being booked into the Riverside County Jail. The case has been handed over to the County District Attorney’s Office for formal review and the filing of criminal charges.
