A Sweet Milestone: Cake4Kids Celebrates 100,000 Cakes for Underserved Youth

A birthday cake is much more than just a mix of flour, sugar, and salt; for many children in the Coachella Valley, it is a rare symbol of celebration and care. Local volunteers Julie and her husband, Kent, are part of a growing "army of bakers" dedicated to ensuring that no child’s special day goes unnoticed, even during the most difficult of times.

The couple volunteers with Cake4Kids, a national non-profit that bakes and delivers custom birthday cakes and treats to at-risk and underserved youth. This month, the organization is celebrating a monumental achievement: reaching 100,000 children served nationwide. Dubbed the "100,000 Moments Celebration," the milestone marks over a decade of providing joy to kids in foster care, homeless shelters, and group homes.

The mission is hitting close to home in the desert. The Coachella Valley chapter of Cake4Kids, founded in 2022 by Ray Biller, has seen a rapid increase in demand. Locally, the organization has already delivered well over 1,000 cakes to children across the valley, partnering with agencies like the Boys & Girls Club and the Barbara Sinatra Children’s Center.

For volunteers like Julie and Kent, the reward is purely emotional. "It’s probably one of the things that brings me the most joy in my life," Julie shared. "Just knowing that we're marking a milestone in their life is rewarding... how can you not find joy in something that’s so much fun?"

Despite the success of the 100,000-cake milestone, the need for help continues to grow. Cake4Kids is actively seeking new volunteer bakers who can help fulfill the increasing number of requests from social service agencies. Volunteers have the flexibility to choose how often they bake and which requests they fulfill, making it an accessible way for local hobbyists to give back to the community.

Interested bakers can sign up to join the local chapter by visiting cake4kids.org/volunteer. Whether it’s a simple batch of cupcakes or an elaborate themed cake, every donation helps ensure that every child in the Coachella Valley feels celebrated on their birthday.
