Palm Springs Police Issue Warning Over Rising E-Bike Thefts Across the Valley
Palm Springs police are issuing a stern warning to electric bike owners following a significant rise in thefts throughout the Coachella Valley. Officers report that thieves are becoming increasingly efficient, often snatching high-value bikes in a matter of seconds.
According to the Palm Springs Police Department, the recent trend isn't just limited to the bikes themselves. Thieves are also targeting easy-to-remove components, including quick-release parts and unlocked batteries. Residential areas are being hit especially hard, with carports, patios, and unlocked garages listed as the most common "hit spots." Police noted that bikes left out overnight are at the highest risk for theft.
To combat the surge, authorities recommend that owners move away from simple cable locks—which can be cut in an instant—and invest in high-quality U-locks or heavy-duty chains. Officers also suggest locking both the frame and the wheels to a permanent, immovable object and removing expensive accessories like batteries and lights whenever the bike is left unattended.
"The faster we get a report, the better chance we have of locating the bike before it gets resold on the secondary market," a department spokesperson said. Police also urge owners to keep a record of their bike’s serial number and take clear photos of the vehicle. These details can be uploaded to national databases like BikeIndex.org to assist in recovery efforts.
If your e-bike is stolen, or if you see suspicious activity in your neighborhood, police say to report it immediately. For non-emergencies in Palm Springs, you can contact the department at 760-327-1441.
