Palm Valley School Secures Funding for 2026-27 School Year Amid Enrollment Crisis

RANCHO MIRAGE, Calif. — Palm Valley School has secured enough funding to continue operating through the 2026-27 school year after a private donor stepped in following reports of a financial crisis and declining enrollment.

But parents and supporters say the school is still facing major challenges and will continue relying on community support to secure its future long term.

The concerns stem largely from the fallout surrounding former third-grade teacher Steven Spurlock, who was charged with 21 felonies, including 19 counts of rape. Parents acknowledged the criminal case severely damaged the school’s reputation and contributed to a sharp drop in enrollment.

“It was very unfortunate because this kind of thing can happen at any school,” parent Elke Barrons said, while expressing hope the community can move forward and focus on the school’s 74-year history.

Spurlock remains in custody awaiting trial. His former wife, Ashley Spurlock, who previously served as the school’s principal, no longer works at Palm Valley School.

Despite the controversy, parents say the school remains an important educational option in the Coachella Valley. Parent Elena Bulatova described Palm Valley as the region’s only nonreligious, all-inclusive independent school with a strong academic reputation.

In response to the financial concerns, parents launched an emergency fundraising campaign called “Friends of Palm Valley School” to help stabilize the nonprofit institution and improve enrollment efforts moving forward.

Supporters say even with the private donation secured, continued fundraising and community involvement remain critical to ensuring the school avoids similar financial struggles in the future.
