Man Rescued After Becoming Trapped in Theater Wall Void for Twelve Hours in Salinas

A 30-year-old man was hospitalized on Sunday morning after spending approximately 12 hours trapped inside a narrow wall void space between two businesses in Salinas, California. The individual was discovered following a complex rescue operation that began early Sunday morning.

According to initial reports from the Salinas Fire Department, the incident occurred at the commercial complex housing the Brewjee coffee shop and Maya Cinemas. Officers with the Salinas Police Department were getting coffee nearby around 6:15 a.m. when they reported hearing muffled calls for help coming from the exterior structure. Following the sounds led officers to locate the trapped individual.

The man informed first responders that he had been stuck in the space since approximately 9:00 p.m. on Saturday night. Investigators determined that the man had been on the roof of the Maya Cinemas building near the exterior lettering when he fell, sliding down a narrow opening at least 22 feet into a wall void space. Fire officials noted it remains unclear whether he slipped or fell intentionally into the tight one-foot-by-two-foot opening.

Authorities confirmed that the man was not an employee of either business, and it is currently unknown why he was on the roof of the cinema.

Extricating the man required a highly coordinated effort by local emergency crews. Rescuers discovered a nearby scuttle hatch but found the man wedged tightly between metal structural beams, completely unable to move. It took fire crews roughly two and a half hours to safely breach the wall and extract him from the structure.

Following the successful extraction, the man was transported to Natividad Medical Center for treatment of a minor back injury. Crews began patching the breached exterior wall between the two commercial properties shortly after the rescue concluded. The circumstances surrounding how and why the man accessed the roof remain under investigation by local authorities.
