Form Energy Powers Up West Virginia With Massive AI Battery Deal

A historic Ohio Valley steel town is officially transforming into the epicenter of the global artificial intelligence boom. Form Energy, an innovative energy storage developer operating out of Weirton, West Virginia, has finalized a monumental multi-year commercial agreement to supply its proprietary iron-air battery systems directly to specialized AI data center grids. The commercial expansion positions the former steel manufacturing community as a key foundation for the rapidly expanding digital landscape.
The blockbuster partnership was established with Crusoe Energy Systems, a developer of clean computing infrastructure. Under the binding agreement, Form Energy is scheduled to manufacture and ship multi-day energy storage systems capable of delivering an unprecedented 12 gigawatt-hours of electricity to secure the power grids supporting major AI facilities. Commercial production and initial shipments out of the Weirton assembly plant are on track to commence in early 2027.
Form Energy Chief Executive Officer Mateo Jaramillo emphasized the unique nature of the proprietary technology, noting that Form Energy is currently the only entity globally to successfully commercialize iron-air batteries. Unlike lithium-ion alternatives, these massive, cost-effective devices are engineered exclusively for long-duration grid stabilization, meaning they will never be utilized in smartphones, consumer laptops, or electric passenger vehicles. With the global demand for reliable, large-scale industrial power projected to double by the end of the year, the scaling of the Weirton facility arrives at a critical turning point for the international tech sector.
A NEW ARCHITECTURE FOR WEST VIRGINIA ENERGY
The factory expansion marks a profound economic shift for local workers. Weirton City Manager Mike Adams highlighted the community's swift transition, stating that the region is effectively replacing its legacy steel industry with cutting-edge battery manufacturing while successfully generating hundreds of high-paying local jobs. The industrial evolution aligns with a broader state initiative unveiled last year by Governor Patrick Morrisey, who outlined aggressive plans to elevate West Virginia into the premier energy capital of the United States.
Governor Morrisey expressed absolute confidence that Form Energy's rapid scaling will play a vital role in achieving the state's long-term infrastructure objectives. State leadership has set a targeted benchmark to generate 50 gigawatts of energy by 2050, a volume deemed necessary to fulfill domestic energy requirements and maintain American technological competitiveness against international economic rivals like China. Furthermore, the governor indicated that state administrators are actively working to attract a flagship AI data center directly to the Northern Panhandle.
BALANCING INNOVATION WITH ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT
The rapid buildout of computing infrastructure has triggered nationwide debates regarding the steep environmental toll associated with data centers. Recent environmental studies indicate that a single advanced AI data center can consume between 1 million and 5 million gallons of water per day exclusively to operate its specialized cooling systems. Furthermore, a single high-density facility can draw as much electrical power as 100,000 standard residential households combined, threatening to strain municipal utility grids.
However, West Virginia lawmakers and city planners have dismissed environmental concerns regarding the Form Energy expansion. Delegate Mark Zatezalo, Vice Chair for the Committee on Energy and Public Works, reassured residents that the potential environmental footprint of the battery facility pale in comparison to the heavy industrial pollution historically generated by the town's former steel plants. Jaramillo added that major technology hyperscalers, including Google and Microsoft, are actively collaborating with energy providers to ensure new builds do not drive up electricity rates for everyday consumers or deplete critical local water reserves.
As the state prepares for a tech-driven industrial resurgence, local leaders hint that additional economic announcements are on the horizon. Nine major AI data centers are currently in various stages of development across the Mountain State, with the nearest planned site located in Monongalia County. Form Energy executives characterize 2026 as their foundational launch year, with plans to optimize manufacturing operations in 2027 before achieving full global scaling by 2028.
