Indio City Council Extends Moratorium on New Data Center Projects
The Indio City Council has unanimously voted to extend its temporary moratorium on new data center projects, giving city leaders more time to evaluate their potential impacts on the community.
Last month, the council adopted a 45-day urgency ordinance temporarily pausing new data center proposals while city staff began studying issues related to land use, infrastructure, water consumption, energy demand and community compatibility.
With Tuesday night's unanimous vote, the city has extended that moratorium, allowing the review process to continue as officials consider whether a permanent prohibition on new data center developments may be appropriate.
The issue has drawn significant public attention in recent weeks, with residents expressing concerns about how future data centers could affect the city's resources and quality of life.
During the meeting, Council Member Elaine Holmes sought to reassure community members following the vote, telling residents, "We will not let our community down."
City officials say the additional time will allow staff to complete a comprehensive analysis and return to the council with recommendations before any long-term policy decisions are made.
No final decision has been made on whether the city will permanently ban new data center projects, but the extended moratorium ensures that no new proposals will move forward while the review remains underway.
