WASHINGTON — A monumental mess is unfolding outside the Lincoln Memorial as National Park Service workers scramble to fix the iconic Reflecting Pool. Despite a recent 14 million dollar renovation pushed aggressively by President Donald Trump ahead of the nation's upcoming 250th anniversary celebrations, the historic water feature has been completely plagued by severe algae blooms that turned the water green, closely followed by massive sheets of peeling paint at the pool's base. Visitors and onlookers have expressed widespread bewilderment over the rapid deterioration of the high-profile project.
President Trump has announced that the Reflecting Pool will likely need to be at least partially drained for immediate repair work. Without presenting formal evidence, the President is publicly blaming the structural and biological failures on deliberate vandalism. The Trump administration is now threatening severe legal consequences, including years in federal prison, for anyone caught damaging the pool. Acting U.S. Attorney for the District of Columbia Jeanine Pirro echoed this aggressive stance, confirming that the criminal justice system will fully prosecute anyone caught attempting to vandalize the landmark.
The strict enforcement campaign has already resulted in a controversial, high-profile arrest. On Friday, United States Park Police detained three-time Olympic canoeist David Hearn, charging him with a misdemeanor count of destruction of government property. The incident occurred during Hearn's long-distance bicycle ride when he stopped at the Lincoln Memorial and reached into the water to examine the texture of the peeling paint. Hearn has strongly denied any wrongdoing, stating that he did not remove, tear, rip, break, or destroy any portion of the liner, leaving the pool in the exact condition he found it.
Maintenance of the century-old Reflecting Pool has presented engineering challenges for decades, but the current crisis is directly linked to recent aesthetic changes. President Trump personally requested a specialized dark blue lining, which he dubbed American flag blue, to create a stark mirror effect for the surrounding monuments. However, shortly after the pool refilled and reopened, early summer heat triggered a massive algae outbreak. In a hasty attempt to kill the organic blooms, crews dumped large concentrations of hydrogen peroxide into the water, an aggressive chemical treatment that unintentionally acted as a paint solvent and caused the blue bottom lining to detach and float to the surface.
With less than two weeks remaining until the massive Fourth of July celebrations bring hundreds of thousands of visitors to the National Mall, engineers are racing against a tight clock to find a viable remedy. The ongoing combination of green water and floating ribbons of rubberized paint has drawn intense media attention and public scrutiny, turning what was intended to be a patriotic showcase into an administrative and logistical headache.
