SpaceX Starship Test Ends in Failure as Debris Falls Over Bahamas and Florida
SpaceX’s latest test of its Starship megarocket ended in failure Thursday as the vehicle lost signal mid-flight, causing debris to streak across the skies over Florida and the Bahamas.
The uncrewed mission, which launched from SpaceX’s Starbase facility in South Texas, aimed to stress-test the spacecraft and achieve objectives missed during a fiery test in January. Signal was lost shortly after takeoff, and video showed the spacecraft tumbling with only two of its six engines functioning.
Despite the mission’s failure, SpaceX successfully captured the Super Heavy booster in a mid-air landing, marking the third time the company has achieved this complex maneuver. However, the Starship itself was lost, making it the second consecutive test flight to end unsuccessfully.
SpaceX has not confirmed whether automated abort systems triggered self-destruction, as occurred during a previous test when debris landed in Turks and Caicos, striking a car.
CEO Elon Musk previously delayed the launch due to concerns but moved forward with the test Thursday evening. SpaceX will now review the failure as it continues development of the world’s most powerful rocket system.
