March marks both Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) Awareness Month and Women’s History Month—an especially meaningful time for Emily Silver Owen, who embodies strength and perseverance. In 2019, Emily’s life changed in an instant when she and her dog were struck by a car. While she survived, her beloved dog did not. Emily spent weeks in a near-coma and years in recovery, having to relearn basic skills such as walking, talking, and feeding herself.

Now, she’s sharing her powerful story in her debut book, The Best of the Worst, which she describes as a stream-of-consciousness journey turned therapeutic memoir. “It started as a way to process what was happening,” Emily says, “and turned into something that could help people going through similar or different struggles.”

Despite physical limitations—like not being able to run—Emily works at an elementary school and now lives alone with her new dog Pepper. She hopes her story increases awareness and understanding of how brain injuries affect people differently, noting, “Just because someone looks okay doesn’t mean they are okay.”

Emily credits her late mother’s best friend, as a key figure in her recovery. Her message is clear: support matters, and recovery is possible.

You can find Emily’s book wherever books are sold.
