Study Links Online Sports Betting to Increased Anxiety and Depression
Online sports betting is becoming more accessible across the United States, but new research suggests it may come with mental health risks. Mandy Gaither speaks with Mark Meiselbach of the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health about a study comparing health insurance claims from 2016 to 2023. Researchers found a 5% to 7% increase in prescriptions for medications used to treat anxiety and depression among men and women in states that legalized online sports betting. The study highlights concerns about problem gambling, including chasing losses, disrupted sleep, increased substance use and potential mental health consequences.
